THIS was what I had hoped to read with Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.Unlike the other one, this book concentrates on the Mercer House murder and trials following. She concentrated on facts by actually interviewing those involved. She spoke with people who prosecuted, defended and knew Jim Williams. She was able to incorporate actual trial testimony and closing arguments.
This author also gave closure to the story. What happened after the Williams trial. Yes, I knew some of it from the other book, but this one didn't come across as fantasy. A good read if someone wants to know about this murder and trial.

Great follow up to original book. More information to allow readers to make up their minds about Jim Williams. Personally I feel it was an act of self defense not a premeditated murder. Mr. Williams was unfairly tried by a zealous prosecutor. Many times the obvious is not dramatic enough so the lies get told and the web of deceit grows while lives get ruined. Was Mr Williams a saint? Hell no, but Danny was a monster.
I loved this book! Much mores factual that the original book and movie. Even after experiencing both of the aforementioned, it held my interest from beginning to end. Lots more details about the four trials Jim Williams went through. If you have visited the house in Savannah where the story takes place you will be especially glad you read this book.
I enjoyed reading this fast paced book,on the outcome of Jim Williams legal saga... it was interesting. And I felt enlarged the characters a bit more.. I enjoyed read ing about Culture of savannah Georgia... as I visited there and found it uniquely beautiful and extremely interesting historically
I had no idea that the movie was based on a true story. It was really interesting to read this book from the Crimescape series. It gives you a clearer picture of the relationship between Jim Williams and Danny Hansford. Great reading. Definite recommendation.
I found the backgrounds of Danny and Jim to be interesting. It's so sad that a man with Jim's abilities became so obsessed with an obvious psychopath. That became the Evil in the Garden! Jim probably would have gone to prison for his dishonesty with clients if he didn't have friends in high places. The book has an overall view of all that led up to the murder, discrepancies at the crime scene, and the four trials with a final resolution. The author gives her opinion about the night of the crime and the reader gets to speculate also. Too bad the forensics we have today weren't available then.
Well written about an involved situation/people/crime. Gives one an understand of the setting and society of the story and the people involved. The personalities are developed enough to understand their perceptions and actions. The aftermath of the crime shows the results of actions that the judicial system tries to address and the media exploits so that there is a failure of society to be protected. Well presented and thoughtfully written.
I'm not a fan of the "true crime" genre, but I did read MIDNIGHT and loved it. I think I even watched some of the movie (VERY rare for me!) Savannah is an eerily beautiful town and the perfect setting for this dark, complicated story. I think the author did a good job of presenting information which adds to the reader's knowledge, although there is inevitably some overlap with the Berendt book.
Some of her claims cannot be proved or disproved at this distance. Jim Williams MAY have pimped for closeted gay men in return for financial or social favors. In the days when known homosexuals were virtually lepers, such arrangements were common. The author's belief that William's good looks, his apparent masculinity, and his appeal to women were key to his success is perceptive and rings true to this old Southerner. A flamboyant or effeminate man might have been tolerated, but not accepted socially or in business.
I think she makes an excellent argument that the charge of premeditated murder was absurd. If Williams had wanted to get rid of his young lover, he was certainly smart enough to do so without ruining his own life in the process. It COULD have been a deliberate killing in a moment of passion, but that doesn't jive with William's cool, calculating personality. The most likely explanation is that the older man was infatuated with the youngster, enjoyed the drama he provided, and over-estimated his ability to control him.
Neither the Savannah Police Department nor the District Attorney covered themselves with glory and the whole ugly mess should have been settled in one trial. William's inability to believe that he was in a fight for his life and his insistence on bringing in an "outsider" for his defense played into the hands of the prosecution. I think most people would agree that the last three trials were a waste of time and money.
It's one hell of a story and this author (although not an outstanding writer) tells it clearly. I skipped over some of the lengthy closing argument. If I had been on the jury, I probably would have dozed off! Just as well I wasn't.
